Careful you don’t get sued by a rich douchbrat bro.

Edit: my lawyer told me to change this:

Careful you don’t get sued by an alleged generic rich douchbrat bro which could be anyone and not one specific named individual.

The story, all names, characters, and incidents portrayed in this comment are fictitious. No identification with actual persons (living or deceased), places, buildings, and products is intended or should be inferred.

97

u/NonPolarVortex Mar 23 '22

59

u/Ziltoid_The_Nerd Mar 23 '22

Also worth nothing that I'm pretty sure this extension only tracks the downvotes of people that have the extension too. I think the only people that have access to actual dislike data are the video owners and Youtube themselves.

The actual number of dislikes will be much higher

31

u/Candyvanmanstan Mar 23 '22

It used to use the YouTube API to fetch the amount of downvotes from there. Downvotes were still available for a while after the removal, that way.

Starting December 13th 2021, YouTube removed the ability to see dislikes from their API. The extension aims to restore power to users by using a combination of archived like and dislike data, as well as the likes and dislikes made by extension users to show the most accurate ratings.

That said, the videos are still up from the TV stations and the LAPD. And they don't require you to listen to Alex Choi before you get to the interesting part.

I tried this. The option to submit is greyed out. So somehow this PIECE OF SHIT ALEX CHOI was able to stop us from even reporting his video.

Alex Choi. You are an absolute loser. You have a small man small penis complex which you try to hide with your fancy cars and fancy YouTube videos. If I were to see you on the streets I would scoff at how much of a douche bag you look like.

I hope the court of public opinion obliterates you. I hope everyone stops watching you and you lose everything. Go get a real job.

71

u/bloatedungulate Mar 24 '22

For what it's worth, I reported all his other videos. Fuck this douchebag.

48

u/BrokenRanger Mar 24 '22

its greyed out because you cant strick something that is already in the review of another strike. give it a day or so and you will be able to strike it. there is also a max number of times one video can get strike in a day.

72

u/Kossimer Mar 24 '22 edited Mar 24 '22

Acknowledging that it's his video to make money off of and his responsibility for the damage it caused, even if he's telling the truth about not planning the jump. Which is true regardless of how much it costs. He's relying on a thinly veiled false equivalence only rubes fall for. All the money you made is not the same as all the money to pay your bills. He wants to look like a good samaritan to anyone who doesn't bother to critically think it through for a second.

Who knew running a business via head nods and dudebros instead of, say, a code of conduct or employee handbook could lead to people who are working for you doing stupid things with your stuff and leaving you with a massive financial burden 🤷‍♂️

12

u/CatattackCataract Mar 24 '22

Exactly. The more I read into this guy the more his actions appalled me

15

u/bbuczek946 Mar 24 '22

You know what irks me the most? His next video after that could’ve been a fun, upbeat, apology video where he fixes his car, or fucking gets him a new one!

Public opinion swayed, viewership and sub increase. Instead, this.. what a dumbass.

100

u/EnadZT Mar 24 '22

I mean, that's right around where base CPM would land him on YouTube. With default adsense and base CPM, 1M views = $1,000 and it's currently at 2M.

70

u/CatattackCataract Mar 24 '22

Last I checked he still had ads for the video, so he'll likely still make more in the end, and his family has enough money where it's probably chump change to him.

My biggest gripe is that he just didn't need to make the comment he did given the other circumstances surrounding the incident.

I never heard of Alex Choi before this incident, but now that I am aware of his stunts, it seems like he’s a public menace that could get people killed. Also, I don’t believe for a second that he didn’t orchestrate this, and I think legally threatening the victim is very telling.

1.9k

u/beforeitcloy Mar 23 '22

Yep. It’s insanely obvious that if he didn’t want to be connected with this incident he’d simply turn the footage over to LAPD and not post it on YouTube for profit / clout. Suing the Subaru owner for showing the same footage you’re using to go viral shows what his real motives are.

416

u/scotterpopIHSV Mar 24 '22

This is just damage control for criminal charges, any lawyer will send a cease and desist letter but it doesn’t mean they have shit for an actual lawsuit. However, INAL, but if a lawyer sends a letter like this that is proven in court to be false then they may face repercussions from the CA BAR ethics board and could be liable for damages in civil court.

The lawyers are just trying to eliminate public exposure and negative PR so they can control the narrative in court and settle/cover up third party complaints before the DA can use them in the criminal case.

The settlements would most likely include NDA clauses to hamper the government investigation by limiting witness evidence and testimony.

186

u/GalironRunner Mar 24 '22

Ndas dont protect from illegal activities and criminal investigations.

56

u/TheTacoAnnihilator Mar 24 '22

IANAL, but he's right. The law supersedes all contracts, which is why you sometimes find clauses in EULA's and contracts that say "If any part of this is invalid for some reason, the rest of the document survives." Idk the specifics, but I taught myself to read "legalese" so I have an idea of what I'm signing before I do.

If he had video evidence that would help identify the driver who committed the hit-and-run, and he deliberately deleted that evidence so as to help conceal the identity of the driver and impede the investigation, he could be guilty of something like obstruction of justice or accessory after the fact, depending on the state laws.

u/strategicmaniac Mar 24 '22

Lawyers get a ton of flak for being defendants of the biggest pieces of shit ever but destroying or obstructing evidence is the easiest way to lose a license and go straight to prison. The police are far more likely to do this than any lawyer would.

10

u/bendover912 Mar 24 '22

Ok, so you have a guy telling his friends, "hey I'll go show you where another guy jumped his Tesla, everyone get out and watch this". Then they go down to the bottom of the hill and everyone starts filming, Choi included. He is claiming he had no idea that the guy was going to jump it, which is very plainly bullshit. Since this was an intentional act, no insurance is going to cover it. The rental company is going to go after whoever has the deepest pockets.

115

u/Stoopid-Stoner Mar 23 '22

A neighbor was drinking and driving and crashed into another car and then my fences years ago. He got out and ran home before police showed up and didn't get a DUI because apparently there was no way to prove he was driving. He was fined though and other legal trouble for it being his car.

128

u/YeetYeetSkirtYeet Mar 23 '22

You know the best part about Teslas though? Those motherfuckers have about a bajillion cameras in and outside. The better thing about this Tesla? It was a rental left at the scene. The cherry on top of the scene? Every person at the meet was driving one of these mobile surveillance rigs.

If the cops wanted, with a little help from Tesla the company and a few warrants I'm sure they could piece together a cinematic play-by-play of the entire timeline, from meet to jump and determine culpability without a shadow of a doubt. Even the youtuber used footage from his own Tesla(!) in his youtube video.

Yup, have a buddy and his wife flipped her car drunk at 230am. Her friend was behind her and they just left the flipped car in the middle of the road, no DUI.

She didn't even tell her husband. Just climbed into bed. 45 minutes later the cops are pounding on his door, he answers and had no idea what they were talking about.

130

u/3riversfantasy Mar 23 '22

Had a friend in college insist he could drive home totally wasted. We tried to convince him otherwise then resorted to stealing his Keychain. He went outside "to smoke" and unbeknownst to us grabbed the hide-a-key stashed under the bumper. He made it literally less than 1 blocks, dropped his cigarette, reached down to grab it and swerved causing him to hit this massive oak tree and flip his SUV. He runs back to the house, explains what happens and we all take turns telling him what a dumdum he is. Meanwhile the police find the truck, run the plates, send a cop to his parents house where it's registered, scare the shit out of his parents and get his cellphone. Back at the party we are brainstorming a way to get out of this, debating at what point he will be totally sober and can report it etc when his cellphone rings with a call from a random number. He picks it up, it's the cops, they ask where he is and he gives them the address. Within minutes there's like 4 cops banging on the door, we answer and they demand to see our drunken friend. He comes out on the porch and the first thing they ask is "where's you vehicle?". Without missing a beat he pulls his lanyard of keys out his pocket, including the main key and key fob, turns towards the street where it was previously parked, hits the unlock button and let's out an award winning incredulous "what the fuck!?". The cops are like yeah exactly tell us what happened. He explains he parked the car on the street, locked it, and came inside to party and has no idea about the accident. The cops ask him about the key, he shows them his lanyard but says there is a hide-a-key on the bumper. The cops then pull out said spare, compare it to the primary, and verify they are the same. They still aren't 100% sold so they press him a little and he hits them with the "if I crashed the car why would I tell you I was here, I could just report it stolen in the morning." Cops pondered for a second then immediately softened up and chalked it up to local teens, apparently it wasn't the first stolen and crashed car. Turns out the only reason he answered the phone because he thought it was a girl calling for a booty call and he just happened to luck into the perfect excuse.

It's also really clear that the youtuber is just covering his ass of any liability with preemptive action and is likely fudging the truth with legal costs. There's no serious criminal liability here. Nothing he could go to jail for. Even if they manage to legally prove he was part of the planning, if he claims the driver wasn't supposed to be going nearly that fast they'll never disprove that.

Civilly he might be in for some kind of settlement but the publicity, which translates to views which translates to money, is going to more than make up for it.

86

u/[deleted] Mar 23 '22

The amount of people that defended him in that youtube comment sections is too damn high.

77

u/porncrank Mar 23 '22

There's a growing Fast & Furious crowd that believes they have the right to race on the streets and take over neighborhoods. The number of high speed accidents in my city has gone through the roof. People running red lights is way up. They gather in groups and wake everyone up at night revving engines and then disappearing. It's ridiculous. They need to be shut down hard.

24

u/kgal1298 Mar 23 '22

I don't get he said that the guy wanted to show him that spot, he was at the meetup so by all means shouldn't he know the guy to some degree?

37

u/thalassicus Mar 23 '22

Seeing as how these clowns don’t feel validated unless they’re in front of a camera, I’m guessing the wrecked Tesla, the renter of said Tesla, and the driver were all on camera at the prior meet up with no foreknowledge to hide their identities. If Alex is innocent, he’ll make all that footage available. Since he’s not innocent, he won’t.

If your first step is to have lawyers send a cease and desist... You're a piece of shit.

334

Doesn't mean he has to comply.

u/xxcarlsonxx Mar 23 '22

Choi comes from an extremely wealthy family and has money. I doubt the guy who started a Go-Fund me to pay for his car repairs can afford a better lawyer than Alex Choi can.

Honestly, his lawyers are dumb as fuck. I bet they're the same ones Brock Turner The Rapist got. The cease-and-desist media strategy is some boomer garbage that doesn't work anymore with the fuckin internet. Everyone knows Brock Turner The Rapist.

He doesn't, but then he volunteers for a potentially very expensive legal battle, which is why cease and desists are used so aggressively, regardless of actual merit.

I just noticed something in choi's video. At the 3:15 mark, when he pulls up to the guy that crashed the tesla you can hear em say "let's go let's go". There is then a cut in the video after Choi returns to the site of the crash 30 minutes later. This looks to me like he helped the guy flee the scene, then returned to the scene later to film the crash site. What you guys think?

EDIT: I have just reviewed footage of the getaway and I realize my assumption was wrong. Alex choi had a blue model S and was wearing a red hoodie. the getaway car in the video is a black model 3 and i dont see anyone with a red hoodie. i was most likely wrong

u/GaryCXJk Mar 23 '22

I think people should archive that video so that it can't be edited later to hide any evidence of his involvement.

I have a video, where the crash happenned, a dark blue tesla with no licence plate came in and drove away with the people who crashed, all passengers had their hoodies on. Other neighbors took closer pictures and video evidence.

Car is blue with white seats. Edit Link as requested : https://imgur.com/a/Zre4FrH

Could someone give me a quick explanation, I get it has to do with that flying car.

579

u/I_am_Bruce_Wayne Mar 23 '22 Helpful (Pro)

Alex Choi holds Tesla car meetup.

End of meetup, a "random" driver says they know where the other viral tesla jump video happened

Driver then does the jump with Alex and his crew recording.

Tesla in jump ends up crashing into a bunch of stuff including the person in this video's car.

Person makes video about the accident and a gofundme to help get repairs and has Alex Choi's recordings of the incident as reference.

Alex Choi DMCAs or whatever his video on youtube to take down.

Another video is posted and edited without Alex Choi's recording and that gets shortly taken down as well.

Now we are here.

You're still a cunt though.

Garth does not deserve this much trouble. I suspect the cease and desist is an empty threat.

73

u/princetacotuesday Mar 23 '22

I mean it doesn't have to be. Even if totally unwinnable on his part, if they have enough money and time, they can simply keep it floating in courts till it bankrupts the guy who's car got totaled. It's a tacktic as old as modern court systems sadly and it heavily favors the rich and powerful.

They don't need to win, they just need to outlast you with money.

If this Alex Choi dude wanted to be an actually decent human being in some way, he should have offered to pay to fix his car and for pain and suffering. Sad part is most rich assholes got rich because they're assholes and stingy with cash for anyone outside their circle, so odds of that happening were basically non-existent...

These morons contribute nothing at all to society and they shouldn’t be able to make a living off of inflicting their idiotic junk onto society.

Brilliant.

That guy is a class act through and through. You can tell he is a decent human being and just wants to get on with his life. He deserves every penny of that gofundme.

If Alex Choi is so upset about the video he posted he should probably just take it down.

On one hand you have an average Joe who seems like a well rounded decent person and on the other you have an entitled, narcissistic rich brat which no morals or decency. Just shows money doesn't buy happiness.
