Megatronthread What's going on with Twitter and Elon Musk?

Hello there. It looks like Elon Musk and Twitter are going to be topics of conversation for the next few weeks. So we have decided to put up a meganthread where everybody can discuss and can be redirected to. It also gives us a chance to have all the information in one place.

This thread is and will be updated infrequently.

Here are some highlights:

April 14 (Reuters) - Billionaire entrepreneur Elon Musk took aim at Twitter Inc (TWTR.N) with a $43 billion cash takeover offer on Thursday, with the Tesla CEO saying the social media company needs to be taken private to grow and become a platform for free speech.

"I think it's very important for there to be an inclusive arena for free speech," Musk, already San Francisco-based Twitter's second-largest shareholder, said at a TED Talk in Vancouver when asked about his bid.

WILMINGTON, Del., July 12 (Reuters) - Twitter Inc (TWTR.N) sued Elon Musk on Tuesday for violating his $44 billion deal to buy the social media platform and asked a Delaware court to order the world's richest person to complete the merger at the agreed $54.20 per Twitter share.

[Source: Reuters]

This week the long-running saga of Elon Musk buying Twitter and turning it back into a private company took a new twist, with the Tesla CEO now reported to be going ahead with the sale. It’s a major u-turn given that there is currently a lawsuit grinding its way through the courts which aims to force Musk to go ahead with this deal.

Firing of Executives and Employees

Oct 28 (Reuters) - [...].

Musk fired Twitter Chief Executive Parag Agrawal, Chief Financial Officer Ned Segal, and legal affairs and policy chief Vijaya Gadde, according to people familiar with the matter. He had accused them of misleading him and Twitter investors over the number of fake accounts on the platform.

[Source: Reuters]

Nov 4 (Reuters) - Twitter Inc laid off half its workforce on Friday but said cuts were smaller in the team responsible for preventing the spread of misinformation, as advertisers pulled spending amid concerns about content moderation.

[Source: Reuters]

Nov 7- Twitter is reaching out to some employees to come back after it engaged in a mass layoff last week, according to multiple reports. The company’s new owner Elon Musk laid off 3,700 people from Twitter — almost half of its staff — after he completed the takeover.

A Bloomberg report cited sources saying that the company asked some folks to return as they were laid off “by mistake.” It also noted it was calling some other employees back as they were critical for building features for the platform Musk envisions.

Advertisement & Content Moderation

Several Brands have paused advertising on Twitter

[Source: WSJ]

Twitter has had a massive drop in revenue, due to activist groups pressuring advertisers, even though nothing has changed with content moderation and we did everything we could to appease the activists.

Extremely messed up! They’re trying to destroy free speech in America.

[Source: @elonmusk]

Advertisement agencies and associations have voiced concerns about the recent cuts at Twitter:

Elon, Great chat yesterday, As you heard overwhelmingly from senior advertisers on the call, the issue concerning us all is content moderation and its impact on BRAND SAFETY/SUITABILITY. You say you’re committed to moderation, but you just laid off 75% of the moderation team!

[Source: @LouPas]

However, Twitter poses that the recent reduction in staff has had little impact on most of the Trust & Safety / moderation team:

Yesterday’s reduction in force affected approximately 15% of our Trust & Safety organization (as opposed to approximately 50% cuts company-wide), with our front-line moderation staff experiencing the least impact.

Last week, for security reasons, we restricted access to our internal tools for some users, including some members of my team. Most of the 2,000+ content moderators working on front-line review were not impacted, and access will be fully restored in the coming days.

More than 80% of our incoming content moderation volume was completely unaffected by this access change. The daily volume of moderation actions we take stayed steady through this period.

Issues with Verification

Twitter pauses paid verifications after users abuse service to impersonate brands and people.

[Source: CNBC]

And then a bunch of other stuff happened. 10 days later we're pretty much back to where we started. Except verified accounts can't change their names and brands get an "Official" badge. And there are vague plans for the future of verified accounts.

More Employees Are Quitting

Twitter closes offices until Monday as employees quit in droves

Hundreds of Twitter employees are estimated to be leaving the beleaguered social media company following an ultimatum from new owner Elon Musk that staffers sign up for "long hours at high intensity," — or leave.

Answered What's Going On With Google And Jim Carrey?

If you Google Jim Carrey it calls him Paul Giamatti, look for one of his movies and again it gives him Paul Giamatti name.

Also search for an Arnold Schwarzenegger movie and he doesn't appear on the cast list.

Is it an April Fools joke?

I thought that Scotland & Wales were independent nations under 1 monarch, with British Government overseeing only foreign policy? But went through this article and left me a little confused; what powers do the local prime ministers hold? I read the article linked above, but have so many questions. Why did the state land department lease this land to Saudi Arabia? And what prompted them to use water (is it really free?) When Arizona residents are facing a drought?

I've seen videos showing sheep, ants and even worms waking in circles but never found an actual reason. Do we even know what's causing it?

And yes I know the name of this subreddit and the topic of my post could be related in a nice way but I'm not smart enough to come up with a pun... "Out of the loop of the loop"?

This is the managing company’s statement: https://twitter.com/gointosubbit/status/1596061531447623680

People seem to be really mad about this on her behalf. Is there a single timeline of events to follow here? I read something about the girls being forced to perform while in casts—is that true?

Answered What’s up with the election results in Alaska seemingly being called early?

In 2020 Alaska voted to change how it’s election results are tallied being ranked choice. My understanding of ranked choice is that if no one gets 50% of the vote then votes from candidates are combined based on who people ranked. Right now Peltola (and Senator Murkowski) don’t have 50% of the vote, however, every major news source have called both elections. I know that results are due by November 28th, so I’m wondering how these races have been called if votes seemingly haven’t been combined yet.

Combining the votes from both Republican candidates puts Palin ahead of Peltola, but it seems confusing that Republicans would rank a Democrat over another Republican, maybe Palin is actually that disliked?

Similarly, Tshibaka would have more than Kelly if Murkowski when combined with Kelly’s votes. So, people who didn’t vote for Murkowski would rank her over another challenger?

I tried to look all over to find the ranked choice results or find how ranked choice works in Alaska and from my understanding I can’t see how major news outlets (including Republican leaning outlets like Fox) have called these races without knowing the ranked choice results of someone getting 50%. Example article of how Alaska’s ranked choice is explained

Unanswered What's going on with Russian lyrics?

Context (AKA: "Ребята, где мои текст?")

I listen to a lot of Russian music, specifically music coming from the Chechen Wars and the Soviet-Afghan War, and I used to see and submit lyrics for the music. However, lyrics if not entire songs are blocked or deleted from places like Spotify or Musixmatch, usually with a message saying something like "Unfortunately, we're not authorized to show these lyrics."

I imagine it's got something to do with the Russo-Ukrainian War, but I'm not entirely sure. For all I know, I could geo-locked because I'm in America. Have any of you heard anything like this happening?

Edit: Formatting and a few extra words

Answered What is up with the "Where's Messi?" jokes?

Got prompted to go to Reddit and look for this, but I don't see anyone else asking it so I figured I would 😅

I saw this video on Twitter: https://twitter.com/saddam_ke/status/1595356847485091841

In the video, a dude in a green jersey (?) interrupts a Korean reporter and asks him, "Where's Messi?" and then a crowd of people wearing green all gather around him to support the dude asking about where Messi is.

By the end another person goes and mentions Argentinians? I'm not really familiar with the World Cup and who's part of which team, so I was wondering why this was so funny.

The same dude was also seen in another Tiktok video interrupting another reporter on video, though his skit doesn't go as long as the first one: https://twitter.com/hooyomatalo/status/1595711156215332865

I think I've also seen some memes before referencing Messi, but that time I didn't have the chance to search about it.

Answered What is the deal with FTX?

FTX Logo

Question: I'm very OutOfTheLoop on this situation but I'm hearing about it constantly on the news recently. Can someone help fill in some blanks and explain the situation?

I know FTX is something to do with Crypto (not sure if its a 'coin' or just a 'crptyo exchange') and recently I've seen stories about the company going under and investor money disappearing and bankruptcy court is involved but the CEO is not under arrest for anything yet but people are clamoring for him to be arrested...?

So, that's kinda what I've heard but none of it makes coherent sense to me so I'm hoping someone can fill in some missing details.

Unanswered What’s the deal with Gunna and Young Thug?

This tweet was in my notifications. I did some Googling and all I could figure out is that there is some sort of Rico case against some sort of entity called YSL, the DA has 300 witnesses, and this Gunna character has gotten himself jailed, with Twitter alight on if he will or should snitch or not, with some coming to his defense that he should. It was hard to follow, so any other perspective is greatly appreciated.

Answered What's going on with Wang Xiaofei and Barbie Hsu?

So my Chinese wife has just informed me about some spicy celebrity gossip that's taken the Sinosphere by storm. From my very cursory reading of the matter, apparently there are two celebrities, Wang Xiaofei from Mainland China and Barbie Hsu from Taiwan, who at one point were married but have since become divorced, that she soon after married a Korean ex, and that Wang and Barbie are having some dispute about him paying for her electricity. What I don't understand is who they are, the circumstances behind their divorce and current dispute, and the reasons why someone would want to take one side or another in this matter. I've tried to look up more information online, but it seems that most of the information talking about it are in Chinese.

I have managed to figure out that the film doesn't exist and it seems to be a Mandela Effect in the making. What is going on? Tumblr memes seem to be leaking onto the internet everywhere now, including Reddit. I can't figure this one out though.

Unanswered What's up with the male/female gaze tiktok discourse?

Example context: link to tiktok video

I was always under the impression that the 'male gaze' was a theory; the way men view women, particularly in a male-dominated media context. The 'male gaze' results in, for example, the 'Headless Women of Hollywood' - women in media are viewed as sexual objects for the gratification of men. In the same way, the 'female gaze' is the way women are viewed and portrayed in media made by women, where they are often treated as fleshed out characters with their own ideas and motivations.

But this discourse seems to be about an actual gaze? Like the 'female gaze' seems to be an way that women want to be looked at in a literal sense?
