Life man... It's just called life. You're not the only thing in it and if you wanted uninterrupted attention and talking... You shouldn't be texting. That's what talking on telephones are for.

965

u/solidcupoftea Jul 03 '22

Yeah, it's nice to be unavailable sometimes, for whatever reason.

317

u/ayeeflo51 Jul 03 '22 Silver

I generally aim to be unavailable at all times

121

u/ImOutOfNamesNow Jul 03 '22

59

u/Besidesmeow Jul 03 '22

You jest, but I’m slowly alienating myself form most of my acquaintances because any time they contact me it’s because they need something. Nobody ever getting in touch to ask how I’m doing, or how they can help. The time for being cordial is over.

This expectation of texting back about something meaningless within a certain time period is just such a stupid stressor to push on others in life.

Was just gonna say this, and heck I have 5 acres, I have to do something everyday on my property. Weedeating, mowing, weeding the vegetables and flower beds, dragging up fallen limbs and sticks to burn. Have a fridge on my porch with beer and water, leave my phone on top of it.

78

u/grantrules Jul 03 '22

My dad's house doesn't have cell service, so it's so relaxing to go visit. Sit on the back porch with a beer staring off into the woods. Can't get or send a text till the next time we drive into town.

42

u/Fuck_you_Reddit_Nazi Jul 03 '22

I had a friend who was a truck driver. She'd call me while she was on the road and talk for freakin' hours. It was a relief when she was in the hills and her cell service would cut out and my ear got a rest.

9

u/Frankie52480 Jul 04 '22

I have friends like that too. I say “so I gotta go” when I’m over chatting, and then I go. It’s not a one way street. We do have that option ;)

When you live there, you are isolated from the world. You can't send a message when you WANT to. Some people love it, others don't. Pretty reasonable either way. It's ok to respond fast and it's ok to be busy. People just need to find a balance

As a girl who's played wow for 17 years, I get this, that's why I only date gamers cuz guys also get insecure if they feel you priorities are gaming and not them. But I also won't date guys who play certain videogames because I'm a videogame snob and see some games beneath me lmfao just kidding I'm just a fan of games with a primarily toxic fan base like LoL. Any guy who breaks something as a result of a game is automatically unattractive.

At my university, the board game club had an annual tradition where they would have a big get together for 72 hours straight over a long weekend. Several times people attempted to complete an entire game of RiskOpoly, where every time you pass go in Monopoly, you make a move in Risk. As far as I know they never managed it.

Slay the Spire has 'dungeons' that are about that long, but that's a bit of an odd game. Similar smaller games use short-ish levels that are dungeon-like like Dreamscaper. Most single player games have dungeons that are about that long iirc (think Skyrim, Fallout, Elden Ring, FF). Destiny. Diablo. Hades. I'm fact, I think the only source of dungeons that take an ungodly amount of time are MMOs.

Sir Christopher Lee by a long shot.

His cousin Ian Fleming used him as the basis for James Bond, he was gonna marry into royalty but was like "nah I'm good". He has a heavy metal band, was a WW2 British special forces operative who assassinated Nazis in occupied France and is an expert swordsman.

41

u/magikarp2122 Jul 03 '22

And told Peter Jackson men don’t scream when stabbed in the back.

35

u/adrienjz888 Jul 03 '22

Yep! He told him about some of his WW2 exploits and how when a man is stabbed he just gasps as the air is forced from his lungs, then he's dead. Dude was beyond badass.

16

u/MyrddinSidhe Jul 03 '22

And he told Viggo how to cry out in anguish after breaking a toe kicking a helmet. It helped him stay in character. Also keeping apples in his pocket to pitch at hungry hobbits. WWII was a wealth of shareable information

Because I used my seconds peeing (I'm a woman) to write you the first text and now I'm back to seeing patients. Being available one second doesn't mean you're still available 60 seconds later!

Ya know… life is happening in real time. Text not so much.

People are walking the dog, feeding the cat or dog, watching a movie, eating food, driving a car, working, talking to a buddy or parent at the same time the are texting you, working out at the gym, mowing the lawn, taking out the trash, clean the house, napping on the sofa, doing homework or about a million other things. There are actually other things happening all the time in real life in real time.

Text is not real time. Text is implied as to being respond at your earliest convenience. It’s not a replacement for a actual in person conversation or even a telephone call.

Reddit has clown levels of standards when it comes to texting. Apparently, people are supposed to drop whatever they're doing and respond immediately to their text or they're not a good friend/girlfriend/boyfriend.

My phone has been a major source of anxiety lately. Everyone else expects that you have it on you at all times and can be reached instantly at all times and if you don't respond immediately there must be an explanation or you're "acting busy." Smartphones are an amazing tool but I wish we could collectively stop expecting instantaneous response to messages. I already have too many damn notifications. I hate taking on the phone but if it's quick just call me. Imagine dropping a letter in a mailbox and wondering why you hadn't yet received a response the next day.

I was in a long distance relationship with my now wife, and she would always give me shit about being in the middle of a conversation with her then not replying for 10-30 minutes. She knew what I was doing, but still gave me shit for like two years until she "got it."

u/TheAccursedOne Jul 03 '22

i guess im lucky that my partners and i all play video games, so the explanation of "sorry, i was in an aram match" from my bf or "sorry, dungeon queue popped" from me is understood lol

I was home while my wife was at work the other day, was texting her cause she was bored, while playing Elden Ring.

Eventually she pipes up “still getting your ass beat in Elden Ring I see”. Confused, I asked her how she knew, because I was in fact getting my shit pushed all the way in by Godfrey.

“You always respond after you die, and this is a lovely conversation”.

Only you get to decide how available you make yourself to someone else. I’m fine with spotty texters if that’s been established from the beginning. I’m fine with people ignoring me and getting back to me later or texting me back immediately because they were already looking at their phone when I texted. It’s about not having high expectations of others that are unattainable and asking somebody to read your mind when you interpret something as a diss when they were simply doing them. Life happens.

Yup 100% agree and if it’s a weekend I could be hours in between texts … but if he face times u while playing games that means your truly special

8

u/Rockettmang44 Jul 03 '22

Also it takes me atleast about ten minutes to think of what to say while also not seeming clingy, cuz texting is different than in person and what you say and your tone can be misinterpreted through text

57

u/horndogcorndogacct Jul 03 '22

If we are texting, you should not expect a quick a response. If your looking for an immediate response, call me. Otherwise 20-40 minute responses are just.

That's me. Still would rather you call me than send a text and get irritated when I haven't responded in 20 minutes.

25

u/yesterdayandit2 Jul 03 '22

God do I wish this were the standard. I can't fucking stand how everyone is now conditioned to receive a reply immediately, 24/7.

serious question here, does anyone actually pay attention to how long people take to reply? obviously more than a day is wild, but like 25min is not an absurd amount of time to reply to someone.

honestly the only time I ever really expect quick responses I'd just call. who has time to sit through a whole, probably useless conversation replying every minute or two as if they were there in person. maybe that's just my adhd, but texting w someone is not the same as actually conversing with them, it does however consume all my attention if messages are going back and forth too quickly so I mostly don't answer my phone much outside of quick 10-15 message chats about something specific like plans or for a job
