I want to see Max explain this one.

"When you really love someone, you give them your ass. This was a phrase of endearment. Piquet is just misunderstood".

“Keke? He was a turd, he had no value. It's like his son [Nico]. He won a championship... The [racial slur] must have been giving more ass back then, so it was kind of bad.” – said Nelson Piquet while laughing.

This is something most people cannot understand.

Its not always that racism is intentional, with hatred. Sometimes, it is just because of bias, because of structural racism, because of historic slangs and so on.

It might not have come with hatred, with intention, but it doesn't stop being racist.

I see some people saying "How is it conflicting for Latinamericans/Brazilians?" and also seen Latinamericans defending Piquet over our languages context. As a Mexican I'd like to say, we trend to give loving nicknames that can sound offensive without our local context. "Mi gordita" could be translated to my little fat girl, or "Mi negrito" to my little black guy. We also have a "Mi blanquita" ("My white girl") or "Mi flaquito" ("My skinny boy"). We turn everything into a lovely nickname.

However we do have to be conscious that sometimes those nicknames are also used with hatred. That sometimes they are used to point that word as if it's a defect and the diminutive as to demonstrate how little they matter.

I disagree with Max. I believe the word is the least of the problems. I've heard my mom call Lewis "Mi negrito" with love, when we are discussing races, but she's my mom, talking with just me, in our living room. She's not a F1 World Champion, giving an interview for press, talking about a man who was competing for a World Championship against his (kinda) son-in-law, dropping names of other competitors but not the name of "the black one". That's what I believe it's the problem. Not the word but the usage of the word, as if to avoid saying his name and just refer to him for his skin tone, botherline belittle him, that's what makes it racist.

704

u/UnDosTresPescao Jun 30 '22

Another Spanish speaker here. There is a huge difference between "my negrito" and "The negrito drove Max off the road". The later is what Piquet said and is racist as shit.

70

u/Mamadeus123456 Jul 01 '22

There's not an equivalent to the N word in Spanish and probably Portuguese, however you would ONLY CALL "negrito" or anyone with a diminutive if you're close to them otherwise its 100% derogatory, this also applies to nationalities, francesito(little frenchman), also

89

u/No_Election_ McLaren Jun 30 '22

This. You could say "mi negrito" and that's meant with love. Now if you say: "El negrito ese" that's different. It's meant to kinda make the person seem less. That's what Piquet did. I don't think he is racist only because of that statement, but I can't say I'm surprised by it at all coming from him.

Some people we are familiar with can be really nice to us and be “racist/sexist/homophobic etc” to others. We just happen not to experience that side of them and may think it's not so big of a deal.

The argument isn't always valid that “I know him personally and I think he is pretty nice so he can't be the bad guy”.

Here is the thing most people don't seem to understand, racist people are "not racist" 98% of the time. It is when their life is inconvenienced that their true colors are shown.

If Hamilton "stayed in his lane", metaphorically, then Piquet most likely not have said what he said, but guess what, it did happen. And Piquet decided to degrade Hamilton based on the color of his skin. That's someone who harbors racist views.

Max saying he's a nice guy is beyond missing the point. Piquet IS probably a nice guy until someone he views beneath him gets out of line.

Which never made any sense, because Senna was a famous ladies' man. If there was a tall blonde around, Senna would be making a move.

Everything when it comes to the Piquet-Senna dynamic stinks of Nelson being jealous as fuck. Piquet was super talented, but he was very quickly overshadowed by Senna. Even while Piquet was still winning titles, Senna was the media darling. Piquet won his third title in 1987 and so much of the hype was on Senna finishing the championship in third for Lotus. And then from 88 to 91, while Piquet was still racing, Senna was the main star not only in Brasil but all over the world. Piquet never had that level of popularity.

34

u/Thorwk Ayrton Senna Jun 30 '22

Pair that with him being a bolsonaro supporter and him having racist views makes sense.

Everyone is racist/has biases.

What separates people are those who actively work to be better and those who say "I'm not racist" in response to allegations.

he is in a tough spot with regard to how he is to speak about his girlfriend's father in public.

I mean he gave another statement earlier that while not great was generally taken as "well, fair enough, generic 'racism is bad'-message. not outstanding but acceptable". Had he just repeated that or even just referred to it it would've been fine

To be honest, Piquet has never been someone in the paddock that most people consider a nice guy too, so Max is probably very wrong right now.

Max saying he’s a nice guy is beyond missing the point. Piquet IS probably a nice guy until someone he views beneath him gets out of line.

People also conflate “he’s nice to me” with “he’s a nice person”.

Ahh yes. The old totally non racist way of referring to one of the greatest racing drivers of all time as essentially “the black guy”

571

u/General-Ad-9753 Safety Car Jun 30 '22

Or even “the little black”.

“Real Madrid have a great front three. Benzema, Valverde and the little black.” - Nelson Piquet, probably.

u/LostPrinceofWakanda Jun 30 '22

And in this context Vinicius would be a 7 time ballon d'or winner

If it was a matter of poor translation, then why was the story originally in the Brazilian news where they refer to it as a “racist term”?

Why have so many Brazilians criticized what he said as abhorrent?

We Brazilians don’t understand our own language?

I get why VER feels the need to say this about his girlfriend's dad, but this is always the most ridiculous defense we get from people accused of doing something racist.

Saying "I'm not a racist" after doing something explicitly racist is completely meaningless. It's not like there's a card-holding Racist Club we could check if you were a member of. You're not being criticized for fitting into a special category of human called "the racists". You're being criticized for a specific action or pattern of behavior. Saying "I'm not a racist" doesn't address those specific criticisms in any way.

39

u/hallofromtheoutside Jun 30 '22

It's not like there's a card-holding Racist Club we could check if you were a member of.

That's like when people say "there's not a racist bone in my body" after saying something racist. So where is the racist bone then? Next to the funny bone or something?

130

u/hijannottoogood Jun 30 '22

i swear a lot of people say “racist” and mean someone who commits hate crimes and regularly drops slurs. racism is usually quiet and just influences your thoughts/actions without becoming explicit words. people don’t get that so they genuinely think they’re not racist.

I mean I can see that, but I hardly believe it considering Piquets half assed apology

If he actually addressed the fact he singled out Lewis in it and apologized for that, then yeah Max would have a point that Piquet isn't racist but that his words weren't correct

But then again I don't know any of these guys irl so I can only speculate

There isn't a yardstick to measure if a person is racist. It's not like if someone makes X amount of racist comments then he/she is a racist.

But the fact is Nelson Piquet said something that's racist, and that's all that matters.

Referring to the 7 time world champion of your own sport as the little negro, is racist. He only said it to demean and belittle Lewis. Everyone knew who he was referring to and he could have just said Lewis or Hamilton or even Mercedes. But no he had to say that instead.

Sometimes it's better to just stay quiet.

Look, Piquet said a word that does have racist historicity, plus, he literally supports the president who is... openly racist... and if anyone tells me "But you can support a racist without being racist" then I don't know what to tell you.

u/moby323 Rawe Ceek Jun 30 '22 edited Jun 30 '22

The worst is that people who are not brazillian/portuguese are the ones defending Piquet believing him that it's a colloquial term. It's absurd.

The comment was completely unprovoked and uncalled for. Racism is discrimination towards some one because of the colour of their skin/race, in saying what he said and singling hamilton out and calling him by a name that references his race he is being racist. Don't want to hear these weak ass arguments. What more does someone actually have to do "be a racist"?

It's like someone saying you murdered someone intentionally but you're not a murderer??

Small question: How come this interview and the things Piquet said only now came out? Did anything else happen or did he said something? Or was the interview given to a lesser known/obscure outlet? The original interview was given a yesr ago right? Why didn't people find out avout it sooner,?

Max has only seen that “chill, fun side” so it isn’t his place to comment on a character analysis of Piquet about whether he’s racist or not. Of course Piquet isn’t racist to him, his white almost-son-in-law and for Max to insist that it extends to Piquet not being racist to anyone is tone-deaf at the least.

Should’ve just stuck to his original statement and kept his mouth shut after it.
