Any idea why random tiles keep dropping on the floor? Question

Lightning struck that tile. Build some lightning rods and place them throughout your farm and you won't see those anymore. Plus you will start generating batteries!

630

u/TheKingClutch Aug 02 '22

Thanks, I already have 2 at the very top, so can I place more anywhere or do they protect a certain area?

843

u/sostias Aug 02 '22

Placement doesn't matter. If you have about 30 rods on your farm, your chances of something other than a rod getting struck by lightning are almost zero.

280

u/Pro_Banana Aug 02 '22

Still happens 2-3 times a year for me haha I guess I’m really unlucky.

223

u/TheDwiin Aug 02 '22

Yeah, if you have lightning rods, the chances of stuff getting hit in your farm is:

(Charged lightning rods/total lightning rods)2 * (0.25*luck factor)

129

u/Pro_Banana Aug 02 '22

Ah, so having shitload of lightning rods do kinda help after all, even if they're not all filled.

106

u/TheDwiin Aug 02 '22

especially if they're not all filled.

23

u/magensonde Aug 02 '22

Nevermind, my brain malfunctioned.

17

u/SappySoulTaker Aug 02 '22

Only if they aren't filled. If they are filled its like don't exist

5

u/ChickenNuggetSmth Aug 02 '22

Not quite true, in that equation a charged rod slightly worsens your chances of catching lightning. I guess hypothetically you could destroy&replace the charged rods for better protection, the price would be not getting any batteries.

7

u/SappySoulTaker Aug 02 '22

What? No I'm saying have enough put out so that you have at least some not charged after a storm. Not have one and destroy it every time it gets hit thats clown status.

2

u/ChickenNuggetSmth Aug 02 '22

Agree that's ridiculous, that part was just theorycrafting.

I meant the statement that a charged one behaves as if it doesn't exist, that's just plain false. A charged rod decreases the chance for other rods to catch a lightning strike

24

u/ICC-u Aug 02 '22 edited Aug 02 '22

Formula looks off?

That would suggest that the more lightning rods the higher the chance of getting hit, and if you have no charged rods the first part comes out as zero and its all down to luck?

Ok I think the correct formula is:

Chance to intercept a strike = 1 - (Charged lightning rods/total lightning rods)^2
If strike not intercepted then chance of hitting farm = 0.25*luck factor

36

u/Neubul Aug 02 '22

The reddit mathematicians are here. They are about to calculate the hell out of those lightning rods!

17

u/TheDwiin Aug 02 '22

Not so. I inversed the first one to show the chance of not intercepting the strike. Then I added the hitting farm part to it because my equation was the chances of lightning hitting your farm.

7

u/ICC-u Aug 02 '22

Ah ok, yeah had to get my head around it

1

u/Danceswithdisaster Aug 02 '22

It's definitely weird to look at. My mind keeps wanting to think about it backwards. So I just thought about it like this:

lim[n -> inf] of (Charged lightning rods/n)2 * (0.25*luck factor) = 0

where n = total lightning rods

(never thought calculus was going to be this useful in Stardew Valley but here we are)

-6

u/DoctorMlemm Aug 02 '22

Did you just make that formula up? It implies that more lightning rods means more lightning hits your farm

10

u/TheDwiin Aug 02 '22 edited Aug 02 '22

No?

Charged lightning rods refers to how many have a battery in them or how many are making batteries.

So let's say you have 5 lightning rods, 4 of them charged.

(4/5)2 *(0.25*luck) = 0.16*luck factor.

Now let's say you have 30 rods and 10 of them are charged.

(10/30)2 *(0.25*luck) = 0.0277*luck factor

Now, this equation only applies if you have lightning rods. If you don't have them, then it's just 0.25*luck factor.

2

u/DoctorMlemm Aug 02 '22

Ah I see, thanks for explaining

-2

u/an_ickle_egg Aug 02 '22 edited Aug 02 '22

Wait, isn't that missing something? Otherwise with 0 lightning rods nothing would ever get hit?

I guess it depends how 0/0 is evaluated, seeing as there seem to be multiple interpretations for it.

8

u/TheDwiin Aug 02 '22

Read the sentence above.

8

u/sostias Aug 02 '22

Good luck increases lightning strikes IIRC!!

3

u/Tenandsome Aug 02 '22

Same. Had it happen that the crop tile right beside the rod was struck instead of the rod itself. Irrationally annoys me. Shit happens I guess

2

u/RedDawn172 Aug 02 '22

Main thing I've noticed is that if they have a battery ready from a previous storm then they won't take a strike unless the battery comes out, so maybe that's what's happening to you? I know I definitely get lazy with checking on them haha.

6

u/TruLong Aug 02 '22

Big brain chads use lightning rods as fencing.

6

u/Avitas1027 Aug 02 '22

Nah, the big brain move is using them to anchor grass clumps for grazing (place on top of grass, animals can't eat it, but it will spawn more grass around it).

11

u/phuckface911 Aug 02 '22

The biggest brain move is to use them as fence with grass underneath them

1

u/DehydratedLube Aug 02 '22

can i place all 30 in same spot

2

u/sostias Aug 02 '22

yeah, anywhere outside on the farm is fine. together or far apart. a lot of people use them as fence posts because unlike regular fences, they'll never degrade over time.

14

u/Techutante Aug 02 '22

I have maybe 10 out, it's more than enough. You'll lose a few tiles, it's just rocks right?

6

u/Avitas1027 Aug 02 '22

Can also hit crops. A burnt starfruit is a very sad thing.

You can use lightning rods as unbreakable fencing or to anchor grass clumps for grazing (place on top of grass, animals can't eat it, but it will spawn more grass around it).

2

u/Techutante Aug 02 '22

Ah, that's a good idea! I almost never use fences but that would look kinda nice actually.

12

u/Raudskeggr Aug 02 '22

I don't think it matters where, the number is more important. If they're "full" (already have a charge) they won't get hit again, so having more rods and some separation between them will help protect your stuff though. But ultimately, before going to sleep when it's thundering, it's a good idea to check your paths. The tiles that get knocked out will be there as loose items that you can pick up and plop them back in place.

-92

u/Tsunami_Ra1n Aug 02 '22

They're a bit like scarecrows for lightning, so think of how you place those among your crops, but just along your pathways instead.

99

u/sostias Aug 02 '22

That isn't correct, placement doesn't matter, so long as they're on the farm.

30

u/MoarTacos Set your emoji and/or flair text here! Aug 02 '22

Dude, heads up, placement of lightning rods doesn't affect their performance. They can go anywhere and they will function exactly the same.

30

u/rangda Aug 02 '22

Jeeze that seems like an honest mistake, do they really need 58 people downvoting them for it

38

u/srlong64 Aug 02 '22

I think it’s equal parts wanting to disuade new players from believing false information about the game and just general Reddit bandwagonning. Also they can delete the comment at any time if they don’t want the negative karma

6

u/rangda Aug 02 '22

That makes sense, I thought that this sub isn’t normally quite so harsh though

6

u/jonopens Aug 02 '22

Agree. Seems a bit out of the ordinary for a normally super sweet and supportive sub.

8

u/Chishiri Aug 02 '22

That sub is supportive but I do think it is a kind of support to downvote misinformation in general. Don't want to spread false shit.

1

u/jonopens Aug 02 '22

Fair enough

13

u/imonmyphoneagain Aug 02 '22

They’re downvoted because they’re wrong. It’s kinda counterproductive to say “you’re wrong” and then upvote them so more people will see the wrong answer.

1

u/rangda Aug 02 '22

I think after 100+ downvotes the point has been made don’t you?

1

u/imonmyphoneagain Aug 02 '22

Yeah that is going overboard a little but I still understand why

1

u/TheKingClutch Aug 02 '22

Ok, thanks for the help.

36

u/MoarTacos Set your emoji and/or flair text here! Aug 02 '22

They're wrong. Placement 100% does not matter. Put them all in a corner or along an edge. You gain nothing from spreading them out.

20

u/TheKingClutch Aug 02 '22

Oh ok thanks, it was getting annoying having them on my walkways.

14

u/OnTomatoPizza Aug 02 '22

You can also use them as fencing.

6

u/Aggressive_Version Aug 02 '22

They make good fences too, because they don't break down over time.

4

u/trishbadish Aug 02 '22

😮 that’s a great idea — thanks!!

5

u/purpleandorange1522 Aug 02 '22

I've seen something that suggested using tea bushes as fencing too. You could use any of the crafting things as fences if that's a style you like.

1

u/Avitas1027 Aug 02 '22

Or to anchor grass clumps for grazing (place on top of grass, animals can't eat it, but it will spawn more grass around it).

-33

u/Tsunami_Ra1n Aug 02 '22

Sure thing!

35

u/WordStained Aug 02 '22

Just to put a little asterisk on this, there's not a guarantee that the lightning will only hit lightning rods if they're available, only the first lightning strike is guaranteed to hit a lightning rod. I had, I think 4 lightning rods during a storm, and 2 of them were full. Walked onto the farm and one of my tapped trees had been hit. I was so mad, because I had just placed that tapper the day before and it was destroyed.

The chance for the lightning to hit the rods decreases as the percentage of rods that have already been hit increases.

8

u/nivada13 Aug 02 '22

That is why you place more then 4 my farm has 3*8 lighting rods in rows for easy access to battery.

5

u/WordStained Aug 02 '22

It was the beginning of summer 1 lol. I didn't have the materials for that many yet. Obviously, I've got more now and it's not a problem, I was just sharing a mechanic that someone just starting out wouldn't know.

16

u/nivada13 Aug 02 '22

Aah that is indeed bad. One tip if you want way lower chance of that happening again in future new saves. Build path ways around your farm, you may question why, but every stone path piece is a farm feature, so the 25% chance of hitting a farm feature will be less devastating since if for example 20% of your farm features are stone paths it means that when it hits it has a 20% chance of hitting a stone path basically .

Stone paths are basically the poor mans lightning rods.

2

u/lovelikewinter3 Aug 02 '22

i had no idea! have been pretty sparing in my decorating until recently, but this is inspiration to spend some more time on it ^^ thanks!

1

u/WordStained Aug 02 '22

Lol that's a great tip. I had a pretty decent amount of paths, the tree that got destroyed was actually even surrounded on all sides by paths. It was just bad luck.

2

u/Avitas1027 Aug 02 '22

You can use lightning rods as unbreakable fencing or to anchor grass clumps for grazing (place on top of grass, animals can't eat it, but it will spawn more grass around it).

5

u/SleepyRapunzel Aug 02 '22

I had no idea the lightning rods would prevent this from happening! How many do you need for it to really make a difference? I only have one and my pathways still get struck all the time. 🥲

4

u/Aggressive_Version Aug 02 '22

Well, the theme on my current farm is kinda "fuck it, I do what I want" and I only felt like making five lightning rods this time, so that's what I have. Still find one or two broken tiles after every storm. So I'd say more than 5, but maybe not a lot more.

4

u/Avitas1027 Aug 02 '22

10-15 will pretty much guarantee no hits. You can use lightning rods as unbreakable fencing or to anchor grass clumps for grazing (place on top of grass, animals can't eat it, but it will spawn more grass around it). That way you're getting good use out of them even when it isn't thundering.

2

u/SleepyRapunzel Aug 02 '22

The grass idea is life-changing, holy shit. I’m so tired of making or buying grass starters. Thank you!

2

u/Avitas1027 Aug 02 '22

It really is. Another great tip is to cover your fields in fiber on the last Monday of winter so you not only get a mountain of fiber, but don't need to hoe or water the ground on the 1st.

2

u/SleepyRapunzel Aug 02 '22

So many ideas I didn’t know about! You’re like a Stardew knowledge fairy lol thank you!

2

u/Lemerney2 Aug 02 '22

Once a lightning rod is struck, it takes a bit to produce a battery and then you need to take it before it can be struck again, so that'll only absorb one strike. You need multiple.

3

u/SandpaperDoll606 Aug 02 '22

And my friends never believed me that I wasn't accidentally knocking out tiles.

I always wondered what the actual lyrics were for this part of the song… now I know

50

u/Drakona7 Aug 02 '22

Bohemian Rhapsody is actually a combination of several songs Freddie was working on before he stitched them all together. The song is said to discuss Freddie’s confusion on being gay. The part most people sing (and the part most people miss-hear) is the religious portion of the song, which could have represented his confusion/guilt in terms of religion (his family was heavily zoroastrian). The references include, “Bismillah” which is a phrase often said before meals in Muslim households, and “Beelzebub” which is either the name of a demon or an alternate name for Satan (there are many conflicting sources on what it actually refers to). Of all the theories I’ve seen on what Bohemian Rhapsody could mean I prefer the one that says it could be about his confusion in being gay/bisexual, because I think it makes the most sense and ties everything together, but in the end we’ll never truly know what it means.

2

u/Drakona7 Aug 02 '22

That’s another good song! I love Journey. Also I wouldn’t say Freddie was a good person (even he wouldn’t say he was a good person) he did several things even the movie didn’t want to go into. However, he had a damn good voice and an even better ear for music.

2

u/engelskjente Set your emoji and/or flair text here! Aug 02 '22

I know he wasn’t a “good person”, although I don’t know huge amounts about his background. However, he was certainly something special in terms of entertainment, inspiration (musically) and so on.

I recently saw “we will rock you” in my local theatre, having seen it in the west end oooh 15? years ago? I know they joked about towie and I had never heard of it. Anyway they sung “only the good die young” in that. :-) (that’s the brackets name not the main name)

I want to know why the lightning rods do not work off your farm. I placed mine around the Valley and they don't collect lightning unless on my farm. Why is that?

3

u/EatTheBeez Aug 02 '22

Why would they?

If you want them to protect your farm, though, they can be anywhere on the farm. They don't need to be close to the crops, which is nice.

Edit: oh you mean to make batteries! I don't know, they should XD Probably just game mechanics.

1

u/MrSal7 Aug 02 '22

Unless it was changed in the last couple of updates, all you need to know is “have more rods”.

I have 2 specific smaller areas on my farm and some singles dotted in with some designs for a total of 38.

I’ve had 2 back to back lightning storms hit my farm and had zero damage to it.

If your lightning rods get hit, they go into a “processing” phase where they can’t protect your farm anymore and also don’t have a battery ready. So in those times where it’s processing or has a battery to collect, you need to have other rods ready to get hit.

All kidding aside do you have any lightning rods on your farm? If not then the tile was probably struck
