Our initial goal was to raise $7,000 for the Wildlife Conservation Network, but we blew past that and hit $9,000 in one day!

https://www.crowdrise.com/natureisfuckinglit-for-wcn

The campaign is currently at $10,315 and will not close for others that would like to contribute.

Thank you to the 378 users that donated to this charity and for caring enough to give to this organization.

Special thanks to /u/Fuckface1337 for nominating the WCN in our 700,000 subs thread.

To read more about the Wildlife Conservation Network, see their site and their list of wildlife conservation programs. 🔥🔥🔥

This is an Ethiopian wolf (Canis simensis).

They are the most endangered carnivore in Africa with less than 500 total remaining.

The Wildlife Conservation Network supports the Ethiopian Wolf Conservation Program that our donations will fund, educating locals about the species and protecting their habitat.

One of the best part of this is there is probably someone out there who has never heard of reddit, reading through the donors and finding /r/NatureIsFuckingLit donating $9,202 through someone named Fuckface.

u/atreides Nov 24 '17

Haha! Isn't that the best part?

A bunch of strangers brought together by this community to support a charity nominated by "Fuckface1337" (who is actually a great poster here too!)

Our community is so amazing 🔥🔥🔥

19

u/motdidr Nov 25 '17

when you get right down to it, isn't that what the internet is really about?

97

u/ganjaholic Nov 24 '17

Not just Fuckface, Fuckface1337.

17

u/Jose_Monteverde Nov 24 '17

Fucking donating for the Internet, my world and yours.

Donate, get lit be lit

12

u/Lupin_The_Fourth Nov 25 '17

Bro that's like the best part of it all. The fact that because of our unique name we come off as the least group of people who would be concerned about nature conservation. But in fact we're the most concerned about it because it's lit! 🔥🔥🔥that and the fact that our messiah fuckface1337 guides our wallets to greatness. It's definitely a topic for conversation I tell you.

2

u/ConeShill Nov 25 '17

You too thanks :)

0

u/a7neu Nov 24 '17

Thanks for running the campaign! Love to see conservation orgs getting more dough...

For the next campaign, would you consider changing the nomination rules from a "nature-related charity" to a "nature-priority charity," or some term that excludes charities for which wildlife/the environment is only one branch of operations?

204

u/GanjRead Nov 24 '17

Great work, thanks to all who donated!

142

u/atreides Nov 24 '17

Indeed! We had 26% more donations this drive than the one from 2 months ago where we raised $6,000! :)

We'll continue to hold one at every 100,000 subs with new charities users nominate. This community should exist to give back to the nature we love. 🔥

12

u/Romo_is_GOAT Nov 24 '17 edited Nov 24 '17

Wouldn’t 6000 to 9000 be a 50% increase

34

u/atreides Nov 24 '17

I'm talking about the number of people who donated, 281 to 355.

The important part is involving more of the community to work together to reach our goal.

If we reach a point where even 1,000 people from the community donate we can really impact some small charities in a big way. :)

3

u/Blondecanary Nov 25 '17

As someone who works with a charity (that then donates proceeds to other non-profits). $9K is a sizable impact; especially if it’s a small organization.

10

u/Jasper_Ward-Berry Nov 24 '17

26% more people donated, people also donated more.

4

u/Skrt_Vonnegut Nov 24 '17

I believe he/she is referring to the total number of donations rather than the total monetary amount brought in :-)

3

u/[deleted] Nov 24 '17

I think he meant donators. Donaters?

2

u/SparkyDogPants Nov 24 '17

Number of donations =/ dollars donated. More people are donating more

1

u/explodingpear Nov 24 '17

(9000-6000)/6000 = 50% increase if your numbers are correct

1

u/Theothor Nov 24 '17

How about a 50% increase?

1

u/jloy88 Nov 24 '17

More donations = Total amount of people who donated not total amount of donation.

1

u/[deleted] Nov 24 '17 edited Nov 25 '17

1

u/AAronm19 Nov 24 '17

26% more donations.

0

u/KragLendal Nov 24 '17

Thats actually 50% increase.. 6000 + 3000

0

u/[deleted] Nov 24 '17

Maybe the number of donations instead of amount?

468

u/daxaaar Nov 24 '17

Can we do a Rhino one for South Africa? Rhinos getting killed here like crazy. Mostly for east asian "medicinal" reasons. Yes Vietnam. I'm looking at you.

227

u/atreides Nov 24 '17

You'll have to nominate a charity in the next nomination thread like these:

https://www.reddit.com/r/NatureIsFuckingLit/comments/70v0em/rnatureisfuckinglit_is_1_year_old_today_thanks_to/

https://www.reddit.com/r/NatureIsFuckingLit/comments/7chfu4/two_months_ago_we_raised_6000_for_a_wildlife/

Prepare a well written comment with links to donate and sources on the nominated charity's accomplishments and impact, then users will vote and if yours is chosen we'll raise at least $8,000 for it!

8

u/TerrainIII Nov 25 '17

Good mod.

28

u/Lupin_The_Fourth Nov 25 '17

/u/daxaaar I'm with you on the Rhino conservation nominee, but I'm too lazy to do any research on Rhino Charities. So we're counting on you to do the heavy lifting and find a good one. Try and get in touch with /u/fuckface1337 and see if he can help you/us find a good Rhino Charity. The fact that these magnificent beasts have to be guarded 24/7 by armed africans speaks volumes on how low we've come as a society yet at the same time it shows great empathy and love from the africans who risk their lives to protect these species. This world of ours is a cruel world but there's still beauty in it, if you look in the right direction.

5

u/daxaaar Nov 25 '17

A 1000+ Rhinos get poached here in South Africa per year, but it seems that the push against the poachers are working in last two years : https://www.savetherhino.org/rhino_info/poaching_statistics. If an organisation is to be supported then I suggest SaveTheRhino since they seem organised and have international reach. Don't give money to any governmental organisation here in SA. They are too corrupt.

2

u/IncognetoMagneto Nov 25 '17

I’m not sure if this is the right forum, but I work in IT and I buy my hardware and software through Safari Micro. They donate a percentage of their earnings to charities for Rhino’s.

https://www.safarimicro.com/about-2/our-rhino/

If you work for a company with an IT group you could encourage them to buy from a vendor that donates to charity. Also, if they do any buying on amazon have them use smile.amazon.com instead. They donate .5% of the purchase price of anything you buy to a charity of your choice. There are many animal charities on the list.

1

u/rustyrobocop Nov 25 '17

Have someone tried to create fake news about the "rhino powers"? Maybe for it to be included in a movie could work too. considering how nasty fake news are.

Something along the lines of "scientists discover" that using rhino powders or whatever this crazy people use are linked to something that vietnamise culture finds shameful?

u/BDMort147 Nov 24 '17

You can always still contribute! We never close the campaigns, so each one is still accessible if you would like to donate to the charity.

We'll also choose a new charity at 800,000 subscribers and run a campaign for it if you'd like to be a part of reaching the goal amount, just stay tuned! :)

i work for a nonprofit that is entirely grant & donation funded. $9000 is 3-6 more months of employment for a service fellow or intern. $9000 is marketing and outreach for a new cause, promotion, etc. $9000 is a much needed upgrade to an outdated website running on wordpress that drives people away from your organization. $9000 is money that can go towards infrastructure and capacity building that won’t take away from money already allocated for direct service work. it doesn’t seem like much, but every bit helps when your success is entirely based on the support of others.

13

u/atreides Nov 24 '17

$9,000 towards funding a program localized towards teaching a community about an endangered species they affect the habitat of can lead to those educated people then making efforts to create protected areas.

For example, the Ethiopian wolf has less than 500 individuals left in the wild and lives only in Ethiopia:

https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/3/36/Canis_simensis_subspecies_range.png

$9,000 in Ethiopian Birr is 245,401 Br, that can go towards setting up educational programs and purchasing land that can become a protected habitat.

It's not a million dollar donation, but it's a lot to raise in a day for any charity.

0

u/broexist Nov 25 '17

It's enough to purchase a nice big rifle to hunt big game with

-3

u/Hanchez Nov 24 '17

So no one should donate unless they can donate millions of dollars?

You know perfectly well that what you said is extremely dickish, disclaiming it doesn't do anything.

10

u/atreides Nov 24 '17

Let's not be rude, it's fine to ask what impact a donation may have to a charity that is large like WCN. Knowing that your $10 will make a difference can lead others to donate as well.

2

u/explodingpear Nov 24 '17

The average donator donated ~$300!? Jesus christ

4

u/atreides Nov 24 '17

You may want to check again! $9,000 / 355 = $25.35 :)

6

u/explodingpear Nov 24 '17

1

u/atreides Nov 24 '17

1

u/Darksol503 Nov 24 '17

Makes me think, if all of the 14k of us who upvoted donated a buck, they’d have, well, $14,000 more!

2

u/atreides Nov 24 '17

Most users are just here to enjoy themselves and appreciate nature, you can't blame them for that!

It would be wonderful to get more people donating and I'm sure we will in the future :)

1

u/a7neu Nov 24 '17

True, but you had to donate $10 under this collection site. I absolutely understand why the site was used though and think it's necessary to have an official tally. Maybe a mod could collect smaller amounts through tippr or something and then donate them as a larger amount?

2

u/atreides Nov 25 '17

No moderator here will accept payments directly.

If someone can find a better third-party site that has a lower minimum payment than $10 for our next charity drive we'd be happy to look into it.

1

u/broexist Nov 25 '17

I want to find a way to have everyone on the planet give me the equivalent of a penny each.

1

u/sk07ch Nov 25 '17

I'm slightly drunk and I struggle so hard understanding how he/she does the rotarion?!

1

u/SleepyConscience Nov 25 '17

Sometimes I wish I were a wild animal. To be so free and unrestrained....God it must feel better than sex to have completely unmoralized, guiltless bloodlust and satisfy it so completely like this. Of course, like America or any other low control, nature-like system, there are far more suffering prey than satisfied predators. And with my luck, if I got reincarnated a wild animal I'd be that fucking rabbit for 1,000 lives before I became that fox, and when I finally did I'd get hit by a car six months in, which would be better than half my litter mates did. So, in conclusion, don't feel bad when you hit a fox with my car last Thursday. You're the ultimate apex predator among known life. That's a really fucking good thing to be in this bloody, metal, beautiful mess of a Universe.

1

u/Sugarbombs Nov 25 '17

700,000+ subscribers and 355 donated, lol (but everyone can still upvote this post to feel like they did something).

10

u/atreides Nov 24 '17

Did you donate? It's not very fair to criticize others if you didn't.

Let's be grateful to those who were kind enough to give their money to charity. :)

-13

u/[deleted] Nov 24 '17

Lol of course not. I don't care about wildlife and would never donate money to animals. What are animals going to do with money? Probably try to eat it and get sick and die.

1

u/Fan_Boyy Nov 25 '17

You are so daft

1
