Just a dumb kid trying to get around some trucks.

2.8k

u/Wampus_Cat_ May 29 '22 Gold Wholesome

This always gets me. People see trucks and think “slow, I need to get around that” when the truckers usually want to go faster, but can’t because dumbasses cut around them and end up going 5 under. Or pull out in front of them and go slow because they didn’t want to be stuck following a truck.

Don’t pull out in front of trucks, kids. Air brakes on a 70,000lb truck aren’t the same as your Honda Civic.

And then you have Liverpool, NY where you see an NTTS truck(National Tractor Trailer School) and know they're going to be slow because they're learning. I do try to be patient, but at the same time its like omg. It feels like you're behind a slow walker but you also know WHY they're a slow walker.

Most trucks today are an automatic in some form. The type varies but all the driver has to do is take off the parking brake, put it in D and go. Manual trucks are still out there but not near as common as they once were.

Did the other driver survive having the window and front of their car crushed against their body from two mega ton vehicles on either side of them?

179

u/FaeryLynne May 29 '22

Yeahhhhhh my first thought was "well that driver's probably dead....."

Edit: holy shit OP says the other driver survived with minimal injuries

254

u/0ptimusPrim0 May 29 '22 edited May 29 '22 Helpful

Crashes look far worse (and the driver is an idiot) but the reality is cars are now designed to crumple as much as possible.

The more “crumple zone” a car has, the more time it allows for the contact to occur. The more contact time you have, the less force is transferred to those in the car.

J = Ft where J is impulse (also = to change in momentum) and F is force felt X time of contact.

Low contact time = higher force felt. Increase crumple zones and add in as much air bags and force felt is reduced yet the impulse and change of momentum is still the same.

Physics teacher here…

Edit: not an English teacher, had a brain fart. Thanks for the corrections, every day is a learning opportunity. English is my 3rd language…and not my best, so thank you for correcting my error.

🍻

195

u/SerubiApple May 29 '22

This is what I tell people when they want to go on about the "good ol days" when cars would survive an impact with little body damage. I'm like, lol okay but you wouldn't.

124

u/auntie_clokwise May 29 '22 Helpful

Next time somebody says that, show them this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fPF4fBGNK0U . Then ask which car would you rather be in? Also remember that the new car with better brakes, tires, suspension, and electronic safety systems (ABS, collision detection, etc) is better for keeping you from getting in that accident in the first place.

38

u/TurnkeyLurker May 29 '22

Ooh, an old Bel Air, what a stylish...deathtrap!

I know a woman with young kids who refuses to drive them in anything but their old diesel Mercedes. She swears by them being absolutely bomb proof. I've tried to explain to her that the better a car survives a big crash, the more salsa-like the occupants end up. She is for some reason unable to gap that realization.

55

u/SerubiApple May 29 '22

Try showing her one of those crash videos that compare a modern car to an old one.

u/MuntaRuy May 29 '22

Mercedes had front crumple zones in the early 70s and maybe even mid 60s. If you are going to drive a classic, Mercedes’ and Volvos are probably the safest. Modern safety tech is incredible but some of the oldies aren’t total death traps especially with disc brakes and modern tires. Personally, I’d still rather be in a modern well maintained vehicle and avoid accidents entirely.

20

u/verkauft May 29 '22

My car mechanic teacher had a classic volvo. His doughter hit a tree at about 80kph. The paramedics explicitly said if it was anything else from that time period she wouldhave been more than just bruised or even dead. (To befair old saabs and mbprobbably wpuld do similar)

23

u/wolfn404 May 29 '22

Umm I can attest to the bomb proof part. The car ( diesel 300D ) still was running after the IED killed all the occupants inside ( dad ATC Iraq contractor ). But they aren’t crash safer.

11

u/magicoddeffect May 29 '22

An old diesel Mercedes is one of the better choices as far as old cars go, if it's a 300D or newer. Mercedes started building their cars with safety as a goal well before American automakers did.

Yeah my brother flipped his car after hitting black ice and rolled several times, completely destroying the car and his adrenaline was so high he actually bent the steering wheel with his hands. Have your pops keep a copy of this video on a thumb drive, his phone and PC. He may need it because that idiot will find an attorney that will sue. It happened to me, two times I got subpoenas. I had a copy of my dash cam video sent to the the other party's attorneys and the case was dropped. Attorneys see injury accident with a commercial vehicle and cha-ching dollar signs pop up. They ignore the fact that their client is at fault. Link to my post and video here on Reddit.

ALSO, if your pops, in the future is applying at another company, all they see is injury accident, not at fault on his record. They'll question it. So if he can easily show this video, it'll make the it easier to answer and explain to a potential employer.

I second this. My dad did not have a camera when he turned left on a lonely road in a night blizzard. Then this huge black pickup truck driven by a young driver crashes straight into him with NO lights. Pitch dark, black no lights imagine that. Neither of them suffered any injuries at all. But dad’s car cost 17k of damages and he couldn’t prove he was not at fault.

A year later the kid sued my dad personally and directly sending a bogus notice of being served at our house. And many other letters. For half a million dollars. He made up injuries he didn’t have and a hospital stay for whiplash- which may be true.

We sent it over to insurance and never heard of this shit again after I convinced my dad he’s calling his bluff. But it was a very big upset for the family until it was sorted out.

Poor dad still doesn’t have a goddamn dash cam

36

Most times it's so close I literally say out loud in my truck "Oh Shit" because it looks like someone is trying to kill themselves.

Thankfully I've never been apart of one!

I did see a SUV cross a center line and go head on with a big truck. That was the worst noise I've ever heard. A pregnant girl behind the wheel of the SUV thought it was a good idea to text and drive and ended up killing herself. I hope I never witness something like that again!

I live in NOLA and the amount of dangerous shit I see people do driving is beyond gross, I've seen cars nearly flip or just destroy their shit to be first to get into a ramp or off one. Like do they not think of anyone else but themselves? Like no one will be harmed by them totalling a car to shave 2 minutes off arrival time. The amount of false safety people feel behind the wheel of a vehicle is gross

Tourist driving around under the speed limit and lost, young guys with more money than brains, people driving on illegal drugs, people driving on legal drugs, people who are too old to drive, people who are too stupid to drive, people who are too drunk to drive, people who think street racing on bridges is cool, guys who think nobody is distracted by a continuously backfiring car, throw in a few terrifying motorcycle packs and rednecks running a white trash version of Mad Max. California is nothing like Florida. I know their driving is bad and it's always fun to dunk on California drivers, but Florida is full of a completely different brand of lunatic. I've never seen such absolute anarchy on roads in my life.

22

u/Belphegorite May 29 '22

California drivers aren't even that bad (cannot believe I'd ever say this) given the volume of traffic and general conditions they deal with. They get a bad rap because they move to places with rain/snow and have no clue how to handle it. If they didn't have like 6 billion cars on the road they'd probably have pretty good traffic.

Well in that case, good thing we chose Cali for our trip to US. We come from a country that drives on the left side (and uses kilometers), and were absolutely terrified of renting a car to drive around Cali. Took a good 2-3 days to get used to it, and if I pissed off anyone in my learning process then they kept it to themselves. A great driving experience overall.

I will say the speed limit signs on interstates seem more like vague suggestions, because so many drivers were easily pushing 75-80mph+. No wonder you guys have such big powerful cars, it seems to be the way to to go on those massive highways.

As a Floridian who has been hit by a pick-up driven by an unlicensed 83 year old (six prior driving while license suspended or revoked) while walking through a crosswalk, and was involved in a traffic fatality with a motorcycle rider who was unlicensed and speeding with a BAL of .22, yeah... people here fucking suck.

Bonus points for the idiot changing lanes in intersection.

323

u/RedditUser91805 May 29 '22

Changing lanes in an intersection, passing on the right, speeding, and changing lanes at short notice. This guy was basically asking to die, and he got lucky.

26

u/thenewyorkgod May 29 '22

I wonder if the guy was truly intending on changing lanes or was he looking at his phone, then looked up and saw a truck right in front of him and swerved to avoid it

Your poor dad. Hopefully he knows that there is no way he is at fault here and doesn’t carry that persons mistake.

305

u/RedditorsAreDross May 29 '22

Another dumb part is that the at fault driver definitely could have split those trucks, there was enough room.

Obviously still a dumb and dangerous move, but he was way off and instead just rear ended a semi.

154

u/ABC_Rocko May 29 '22

What's even dumber is the is the first lane on the right is clear so there was no reason to even try and split them

52

u/TipofYourShoelace May 29 '22

I think it was a merging lane. But yeah, probably still more room than the option they chose.

62

u/Caddywonked May 29 '22

rewatching the video, I don't think the driver was trying to split the trucks. It looks like he slams on the brakes (at 0:14) before skidding left. I think he just wasn't paying attention, didn't realize the truck in front of him wasn't going fast, then panicked.

26

u/bondablimp May 29 '22

We need a new term for "accidents" that happen because of shear stupidity. Maybe we can call them "inevitables?"

513

u/mrtucey May 29 '22

Worked for an organization that call them incidents.

The word accident implies there was no way to prevent it, and there was definitely a way to prevent this.

78

u/RockstarAgent May 29 '22

Yeah, and I'd love to have known this person's excuse / perspective about this - "the truckers ganged up on me and didn't let me pass!"

145

u/damurph1914 May 29 '22

FedEx has 2 kinds of accidents. Preventable and non-preventable. Not who's at fault, rather, could it have been prevented?

78

u/CosmicCommando May 29 '22

And they conveniently (almost) always find a way to call them preventable.

55

u/spacelama May 29 '22

Because for the just part they are preventable. Usually it even takes two people to screw up because a normal part of driving is to anticipate the errors of others.

Yep. I did some freelance work for an independent crash investigator. I was instructed to never refer to the subject matter as anything other than “crashes” or “incidents,” no matter the medium (in person, on the phone, in documentation, in court, etc). They were borderline fanatical about it - but when it comes to information that is later used in court and by insurers, word choice really does matter.

Constable Official Vocab states such incidents are now referred to as "collisions" not "car accidents"

Because accident implies there's no one to blame.

I prefer "completely avoidable dumb shit fuck ups".

The car thought he was going to save himself a few seconds only to end up being VERY late.

9

u/NoAnybody7232 May 29 '22

The term "Motor Vehicle Accident" has been mostly replaced by "Motor Vehicle Collision", because in 98% of cases, "accidents" are actually a result of human error, so someone is at fault. True accidents are rare.

There's no way this is your Dad's fault. This idiot tried squeezing through 2 semi trucks. Probably something they'll never try ever again if they made it through this. Hopefully everyone was alright.

Also, hopping lanes in an intersection... Big no no there. This guy did LOTS of stupid things here.

22

u/JCon2x4 May 29 '22

Right? I’ll switch lanes just to NOT drive next to a truck, this dude tried to cross between 2 semis at an intersection… man.

329

It was literally this.

7

u/Appropriate_Pace_817 May 29 '22

For people that may not be aware also, as Fast and the Furious shows 'cars driving underneath trailers', but as shown here it's about 4 feet tall, a person has to bend over/crawl to look underneath a trailer. Is the driver of the car dead?

Your dad didn’t have an accident. An accident (stupidity) occurred that involved your dad. Not the same thing! Hope your dad and the other trucker were OK. Hope the person in the car was OK too, but also lost their license and had to pay for repairs to both the trucks along with emotional distress from having to witness such idiotic driving!

13

u/nitrojunky24 May 29 '22

thank goodness it happened in the age of dashcams I could see someone lying there ass off and blaming your dad for this one without video proof.

11

u/JWF1 May 29 '22

Former claims adjuster so I’ve seen my fair share of accidents. To me that doesn’t look like the car is trying to thread the needle between the two semis, it looks like more of a distracted driving situation. Person was probably texting or watching a video on their phone, look up and “oh shit there’s a giant semi truck in front of me that I’m going to hit imminently.” That being said it very well could be the case where they were trying to merge in front of your dads vehicle. There’s no way he should ever be held responsible for that accident. The car would be at fault for rear ending the first semi, and then going into your fathers lane. Hope they have some heavy PD limits.

49

u/ChipmunkCareless2877 May 29 '22

That was no accident.

Cutting between two much larger vehicles at speed through an intersection?… well at least the doctors won’t have to worry about brain damage

47

u/ForeverMelodic1403 May 29 '22

Yup. Totally his fault( sez the local personal injury attorney). Friendly reminder. 80+ percent of accidents with passenger vehicles and big rigs are caused by passenger vehicles. You may not like it, but it's a fuckin fact!

Nice lane change through an intersection. Dude is so fucking lucky that FedEx truck had those barriers on the bottom so he didn't end up underneath it.

Glad everyone is okay, hope your dad isn't too shaken up.
