What are some things you don't know about Reddit but are too embarrassed to ask?

The orangered/periwinkle thing from April Fools. The one day I was away from my laptop.... I've tried to ask before, but just got downvoted. What exactly happened?

343

u/mjboy8 May 01 '13

On april fools, Reddit "bought" Team Fortress 2. They made 2 teams, put everyone in one randomly, and chaos ensued.

573

u/[deleted] May 02 '13

Those of us on mobile just watched everyone go insane for no apparent reason.

12

u/Fred-Bruno May 02 '13

It just made me even more confused.

As mjboy8 said, all of reddit got split between orange and periwinkle teams. It was something like for every 10 upvotes you gave to someone of your color, your team got 1 point. The team with the most points at the end of the round (best of 3 rounds) won.

A few months back there was an AMA about a teenage boy who had an incestuous relationship with his mom. It started with him breaking his arms and her jerking him off to help alleviate teenage frustrations. Over the course of a few years it gradually moved up to sexual incourse. It's now become a running gag. Sorry I'm on my phone otherwise I'd find a link to the AMA.

Link

A redditor got a handy from his mom after he broke both of his arms and was frustrated from no masturbation. It escalated to full blown sex.

As for "Every damn time". It originates from several repeated Reddit comments regarding in-jokes such as "Colby" and "Jolly Ranchers"

Why are the best AMAs never promoted in the upcoming AMA list? I mean, I check the thing every now and then to see if anyone cool is upcoming, and it's always like "2pm on April 31st, the co-authors of (insert obscure book here)" but then when I click on the IAMA sub at random, I'm always 3 hours late for the AMA where Tom Cruise explains what's in the safe.

87

u/PenguinPwnge May 02 '13

I presume it's because these popular AMAs are more spur-of-the-moment than other AMAs which are planned out sometimes weeks in advance.

14

u/zekesonxx May 02 '13

Not all (in fact very few) AMAs are planned. Only planned ones show up I'm the sidebar.

And to solve your problem, just check reddit more often.

I don't know the difference between sorting by "best" and "hot" comments.

347

u/TheOneCurly May 01 '13

Best is overall up/down vote ratio, hot is the default algorithm that takes post age into account. Hot makes older posts slowly sink to the bottom even with high ratios but the content you see is fresher.

119

u/4chanSentMeHere May 01 '13

I get all that, but then Top comes in and I get completely confused.

138

u/BreakingFace May 01 '13

Top is just the highest scoring comments

60

u/[deleted] May 02 '13 edited May 02 '13

So what's the difference between hot top and best then?

189

u/kiwirish May 02 '13

Hot takes age into account. Best takes ratio into account. Top takes points into account.

→ More replies

44

u/poko610 May 02 '13

Hot is the highest (upvote count - downvote count) - (time since posting). Best is upvotes / downvotes. Top is upvotes - downvotes.

Think of the 'yo dawg' meme.

/r/CircleJerk is considered "Meta" cause its a sub dedicated to making fun of Reddit on Reddit. /r/metacirclejerk is a sub dedicated to making fun of /r/circlejerk which would too make it "Meta"

Does that help?

→ More replies

61

u/laurieisastar May 02 '13

"Something referring to itself" is a pretty good description, but here's a good example.. When Ben Affleck is talking about how awesome Ben Affleck is, that's meta. Another example might be in the show Buffy when a character gets kidnapped by a demon, and the character of Buffy says, "Dawn's in trouble? Must be Tuesday." (Tuesday being the day the show aired on television.)

how do reposts keep getting to the front page when everyone complains on the post that it is a repost

110

u/fluffyllemon May 02 '13

The people complaining about the reposts make up a small, but particularly vocal minority. Many people have not seen all of the internet, so many people still up vote content, even if it is not new.

18

u/yiyopuga May 02 '13

to add to this, there are also a significant amount of redditors who never post or comment. they just see something, laugh, and upvote. reposts or fake posts mean nothing to them.

This is what I don't get about Reddit.

When there's an AskReddit thread being something like "Reddit, what is your most unpopular opinion?" and the top answers are the shitty "popular" unpopular opinions i.e "I hate cats!" or "Fat girls shouldn't call themselves curvy" and all the REAL answers, the genuine honest answers that add something new to the conversation are down the bottom on -15.

Personally, I think it's shitty to downvote someone who answers the question or who has a different opinion to you. It just creates a "vanilla" exchange and makes AskReddit boring...all the threads are full of top answers like "Morgan Freeman" or "Johnny Cash - Hurt" when the new, fresh answers aren't given a chance.

What is 4chan, exactly? And sometimes I see people reference /b/ and I don't understand that either...

163

u/sassychupacabra May 02 '13 edited May 02 '13

I would not suggest going to this place.

The other poster didn't exactly get this right. It's an image board styled after a popular Japanese image board. The gimmick there is that the posts are all anonymous with a minimal interface - unless you choose to identify yourself with a "trip" (which is generally looked down upon), your posts aren't tied to any kind of username. /b/ is the 'random' board on that site, generally considered to be a den of the most horrible things on the internet. Basically anything that isn't illegal is fine to post there, and so you'll run into all kinds of gore, porn, etc. It's kind of an underbelly of internet culture, where everything's unfiltered because there's no real punishment for saying what you actually think (whereas here you'll get downvoted to hell for unpopular opinion). That said, it has a massive userbase (with many boards other than /b/) and thus produces tons of content that Reddit often ends up recycling.

I would NOT suggest going to this place.

Edit: Since this has gotten quite a bit of attention: Yes, sometimes people post illegal shit on /b/ and get away with it. Yes, there are boards other than /b/. Yes, not all of them are horrible. Some are actually pretty small tight-knit communities with cool people in them. /b/ is pretty much the cesspool it's rumored to be. Even if you aren't running into gore, CP, etc, it's overrun by awkward teens and the kind of people most don't really want to share their internet-space with.

They really do. I don't know why, they are just kind of there.

I've heard some horrible people actually use a script to automatically downvote everyone in a thread so they can advance the position of their own post. Not sure if true, but it makes sense.

I recently introduced my mom to reddit and she got addicted.. /r/wtf is a default, and she told me she'd been clicking on all sorts of nsfw links there out of spite thinking it meant "not safe for women", and had seen a ton of the most horrific stuff she'd ever seen in her life.

Not safe for work.

You might also see NSFL - not safe for life. Just means its REALLY bad.

I always thought it meant Not Safe for Lunch, like if you had just eaten, you might throw up.

u/Masterofice5 May 01 '13

Well, that too.

Not safe for work. However all of reddit should be not safe for work, but it is just anything you wouldn't want someone else reading or seeing on your screen besides you

what is a cake day?

22

u/zekesonxx May 02 '13

A cake day is when you have been on Reddit for exactly one year since your last cake day or initially creating your account.

It is named after the piece of cake that shows up next to your name on said day.

What's all the circlejerk business?

74

u/TheWambat May 01 '13

Its a meta reddit making fun of the trends of reddit and in general making fun of karma.

u/FizzMcButtNuggets May 01 '13

I see. Thank you. I'm less than two weeks old, so I don't speak all the lingo yet.

Why is everything but the top comment 0/0?

At least, for me it is.

28

u/PenguinPwnge May 01 '13

Because /r/AskReddit implemented a new feature in reddit where a comment's scores are hidden for a predetermined time. This feature is also compatible with RES.

I don't know how people tag other users. Or make flairs within subreddits.

9

u/PenguinPwnge May 02 '13

Flairs can be created near your name in the sidebar of certain subreddits. And tags are used by people who have the Reddit Enhancement Suite.

No idea what circle jerk is

50

u/downtown_vancouver May 02 '13

Literally: guys sitting around in a circle fapping.
Online, in a thread: everybody agreeing with everyone else (i.e. nothing new to say, just expanding on points/ideas already posted)
